Mauritius is the only African country to be ranked a “full democracy” by the 2017 Index of Economic Freedom with a score of 74.7. The country’s overall ranking is 21.
According to the report, Mauritius has an efficient and transparent regulatory environment which supports the relatively broad-based economic development in Mauritius. The report also highlights the competitive tax rates and a fairly flexible labour law which facilitate private-sector growth.
The Index of Economic Freedom is an annual index and ranking created by The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal in 1995 to measure the degree of economic freedom in the world's nations.
